Achieving performance with O-ring gaskets

O-rings are mechanical gaskets that have the shape of a torus, or doughnut, made from an elastomer. Some O-ring gaskets can be made from solid or hollow metals or plastic materials. They are designed to be placed in a groove and their role is to create a seal between two parts. O-rings can be used in both static and dynamic applications. People can purchase quality O-rings from a company as Ottawa gaskets.

Key info about O-ring gaskets

O-rings are created to work as seals, which close off a passageway, and have the purpose to prevent fluid loss. O-rings can be purchased in different inch and metric sizes. When people have to choose what type of gasket they want to buy, they have to consider the cross section diameter and the inside diameter. O-rings can be manufactured by transfer molding, injection molding, pressure molding or extrusion.

How O-rings can be used

O-rings are often used to provide vacuum seals. This property of them is essential in vacuum technology where demountable seals are an important aspect. Demountable seals are the ones that can be both opened and closed. Because they are used in the vacuum process, they have to be manufactured from materials that cannot be modified or attacked by the gases used in the process. In many cases, perfuoroelastomers are used, because they prove to be very resistant to chemical attack. Also, some gaskets are used in processes where high temperatures are generated and this might attack the O-ring material. In this case, they are manufactured from fluorelastomers, which are more resistant to heat.

How to maintain O-ring gaskets

O-ring gaskets prove to be very useful because they can be used and reused as vacuum seals. They can also be used to introduce contaminants into a clean system. O-ring gaskets should be handled and installed with lint free gloves, because if they will be installed with bare fingers the user can introduce skin oils, which may harm the effectiveness of the gasket. In addition, the user should not use plastic gloves because they can transfer plasticizers to the surface. The O-rings should not be cleaned with solvents because they will absorb the substances and this will lead to swelling. When gaskets are swollen they are permeable, and this should be avoided. The user should not use ultrasonic cleaning because it causes water absorption. The best way to clean them is with lint-free tissue, and if there are any traces of mold then the user should clean them with a damp tissue.
